Gehavende Stad, Muziek en literatuur in Rotterdam van 1960 tot nu, published in 2012 by Lebowski, was a collaboration with writer and editor Erik Brus. Gehavende Stad describes the development of the music and literature in Rotterdam from 1960, the year when the rebuilding of the city, which had been heavily bombed during the Second World War, had been progressed far enough for art and culture to thrive again.

Brus was largely responsible for the literature part, De Vries for the music. The overall focus is on Rotterdam’s most famous and notorious writer, Cornelis Bastiaan Vaandrager (1935-1992). Other writers who feature prominently are Jules Deelder, A. Moonen and Frans Vogel.

The music sections describe the development of the typical raw Rotterdam sound, from jazz to punk to gabber house to hip hop, including interviews with the Rondos, The Kik and the godfather of punk Peter Graute.
