Pistorius, elk land zijn held went to press the day after judge Thokozile Masipa sent handicapped  Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius to jail for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.

The book describes the social and political environment in which Pistorius grew up with his double handicap: the untimely death of his religious and doting mother, his difficult days at school and the sudden discovery of his athletic abilities after a rugby injury.

It also describes the country with its macho culture, its love of firearms and its desperate need for a post-Mandela hero. The story of Pistorius is interspersed with accounts of life in South Africa written by Taryn Arnott, whose background is partly similar to that of Pistorius: same generation, parental divorce, growing up in Pretoria, the emptiness of the world of supermodels and sport heroes.
