Wiegelied voor de witte man focuses on the music of my white middle class youth: rock, soul and blues. For a better understanding of the songs that meant so much to me, I travel to the place where it all began, America’s Deep South. The road trip takes me through parts of South Carolina, Georgia, Tennesee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. I visit juke joints, jazz clubs and honky tonk saloons, historical sites, music studio’s and record labels. Once back in South Africa I am confronted with waves of black anger and white fear. This forces me to travel to America once again - to dig deeper into that mangled history of supremacy and pain. With the blues as my guidebook I try to find answers to loaded questions such as: what are the roots of racism and white supremacy?
